What You Get

What a Full Car Tint Includes

“Full tint” on a car means every window behind the windshield: both front side windows, the rear side windows, any small quarter glass, and the back window. The front two windows get a lighter, legal film and the rear windows get whatever shade you choose. A top strip on the windshield is optional. Most sedans take two to four hours; trucks, SUVs and anything with a big curved rear window take a little longer.

  • Standard dyed film. The entry level. Good privacy and a clean look, modest heat rejection. Older dyed films were the ones that turned purple; modern ones hold color much better.
  • Carbon film. A step up. No metal, so no interference with phone or GPS signals, noticeably better heat rejection than dyed, matte-black look.
  • Ceramic film. The top tier. Blocks most of the infrared heat even in light shades, which is why it is the film most Sacramento drivers upgrade to. Roughly double the price of standard. Ceramic tint explained →
  • Computer-cut patterns. Most shops now cut film by plotter from a pattern for your exact model, which means clean edges and no blade near your glass or seals.
  • Warranty. Quality films carry a manufacturer warranty against bubbling, peeling and color change. Terms vary by film line and installer; ask with your quote.
Pick Your Shade

Shades, Legality, and What People Choose

Tint is sold by VLT, the percentage of visible light that passes through. A lower number is darker. In California, the front side windows have to end up around 70% VLT once the film and the factory glass are combined, which in practice means a film rated near 88% on the fronts. Rear side and back windows can be any darkness, as long as the car has mirrors on both sides. The full California tint rules are on their own page.

The most popular setup in Sacramento is a near-clear ceramic on the fronts for heat, and 35% on the rears for the look most people picture when they think of a tinted car. Families with kids in the back and anyone who parks outside all day at work in Rancho Cordova or Natomas often go darker in the rear, 20% or 5%, for privacy and cabin heat.

Common Questions

Car Tinting FAQs

How long until I can roll the windows down?

Usually three to five days. The film is applied with a slip solution that has to dry out from under it, and rolling a window down too early can peel the edge. Small hazy spots or water pockets in the first week are normal and clear as the film cures; a summer install cures faster than a winter one.

How long does car window tinting take?

Two to four hours for most cars. Vehicles with a large curved rear window, or that need old film removed first, take longer. Many installers offer same-week appointments.

Can I get the fronts tinted to match the rears?

Not legally in California. Front side windows have a light-transmission requirement and a dark front window is the thing officers notice first. A near-clear ceramic film on the fronts gives you most of the heat benefit without the ticket. There is a medical exemption for some conditions; ask the installer what documentation it needs.

Mobile or shop?

Both exist in this network. Shop installs happen in a controlled, dust-free space, which matters for a clean result. Some installers also come to driveways in Elk Grove, Antelope and other suburbs for an added trip fee. Say which you prefer when you call.

Will tint interfere with my phone, GPS or toll transponder?

Dyed, carbon and ceramic films are metal-free and do not. Older metallic films could. If you keep a FasTrak transponder on the windshield, mention it; the windshield strip can be cut around it.
